Quietly tucked away on JFK, Planet Records' misleadingly small space holds an extensive collection of used rock CDs. Check out their selection of current used CDs before shelling out big money at Tower Records—there's a good chance they'll have it for $6-12. Despite specializing in CDs, Planet has a growing collection of vinyl gems for as little as $2. They trade and buy CDs and records of all genres. Expect $1-3 for your old CDs, but don't bother bringing them in unless they are in exceptional condition.

Freshmen, if you were wondering where to go for your free “Harvard '09” t-shirts and the hours of upperclassman disdain that accompany them, look no further. Acquired by HSA in summer 2001, The Harvard Shop sells a diverse and inexpensive selection of Harvard merchandise: apparel, steins, rings, graduation announcements, and those 3'x5' Harvard class banners ($65) that you won't find anywhere else. Moreover, The Harvard Shop offers some of the lowest prices around on T-shirt printing for your team, organization, or overly -enthusiastic freshman entryway. 15% student discount.

A one-stop shop for all your knitting needs, from Sexy Foxy yarns ($28) to warm and chunky Rowan Wool ($14). Aspiring knitters fear not: Woolcott offers workshops for beginners ($100 for 6 weeks), and private instruction is available by appointment ($20/hr). What's all the fuss over socks, you ask? The sock workshop asks the same question, guiding you through the basics of booty-making. Helpful instruction books are also available, as well as all manner of needles ($4.50-8). For those into the group thing, feel free to join up with the members of the “stitch and bitch” event held next door at the bar-restaurant Redline , every W 6-8pm.

A luggage and travel essential boutique—not a bondage extravaganza as its name implies. Not exclusively dedicated to leather goods, Leather World's wide selection of purses, briefcases, garment bags, soft-sided suitcases, and backpacks are reasonably priced considering their quality. The store is also the shameless vendor of those ubiquitous Vera Bradley granny-style printed handbags ($14.50+) that every Harvard girl seems to have slung over her shoulder these days.

With a smorgasbord of writing, fastening, stamping, and sticking tools, Staples has dominated the school supply scene since you had that sweet Trapper Keeper in third grade. Catering to your now more sophisticated needs, Staples also offers a diverse selection of professional office supplies and electronic devices. In the basement, the tech center sells phones, accessories, and plans from Cingular, AT&T, Sprint, and Nextel. Although the selection isn't too impressive, the staff is knowledgeable about the wireless world, and the many store rebates (some redeemable online) make prices considerably more attractive.
Staples is the biggest, cheapest, and yes, most comprehensive office supply store in the Square. Staples has more than just staples—computer paper, ink cartridges, scotch tape, blank CDs, and paper shredders abound. They also have a full-service copy center that binds, laminates, faxes, copies, and even prints business cards (hey, it's never too soon). Copies start at 6¢, color copies $1.04. Faxing $1 per page.
